Home Feeders In Spring Sunshine!

Date: 18th February 2017
Location: Home Feeders
Weather: Blue Sky, Sunny + Warm (13.5 Degrees)
Other Species: 3 Bullfinch, 10 Goldfinch, Chaffinch, 2 Coal Tit, 5 Great Tit, 6 Blue Tit, 6 Long-Tailed Tit, 2 Wood Pigeon, 2 Collared Dove, 2 Pied Wagtail, 1 Grey Wagtail, 2 Blackbird, 2 Magpie

First up were our Bullfinches which visit daily today we had both Male and Female posing for some images. We had 3 in total today.

Just the single Female Bullfinch today.

Even the common garden birds gave some great shots!

Close-up of this scruffy Long-Tailed Tit.

A total of 10 Goldfinch in the sunshine today!

Always scrapping and fighting over the best spot on the feeders!

Even a flight shot... Almost!

Birding From The Window - June

Date: 4th June 2016
Location: Birding From The Window - Newton St Loe
Weather: Cloudy, Low Light, Dry
Other Species: 7 Blue Tit (4 Fledglings), 3 Goldfinch, 2 Crow, 3 Great Tit, 2 Bullfinch, 1 Blackbird, 1 Magpie, 2 Marsh Tit - Of Note

Observation:

Was hoping for blue skies today to complete a 'Birding From The Window' blog, but unfortunately Overcast and Low Light will have to do!

Our Bullfinch pair is back, couldn't get a decent picture of the Female.

Still plenty of Goldfinches about, a total of 3 today, but the number normally increases throughout the day.

Then... A new Blue Tit family appears along with 4 Fledglings. Mum (or Dad) looking pretty worse for wear started off by feeding the chicks who were beggings, but within the hour all 4 chicks were using the feeders whilst Mum also fed.

All 4 Fledglings, look very healthy.

We wouldn't have all these birds feeding all day long if it wasn't for Garden Wildlife Direct. Big thanks to them and why not take a look at their website?

Other News:

Robert (our patch birder) is currently out in Newton St Loe, and has seen 2 Marsh Tit opposite the Heronry at Newton Park Lake. Thanks to Robert for the continued reports and sightings!

An Hour From The Window + Barn Owl!

Date: 5th March 2016
Location: Home Feeders - Birding From The Window
Weather: Cloudy, Overcast - Warm
Other Species: 7 Blue Tit, 3 Great Tit, 3 Goldfinch, 6 Long-Tailed Tit, 4 Chaffinch, 1 Bullfinch, 1 Crow, 4 Wood Pigeon, 1 Magpie, 1 Collared Dove, 1 Coal Tit, 1 Blackbird, 1 Robin, 1 Sparrowhawk - Total Count

Observation: Spent an hour by the window this morning to do quick count of our visiting birds, as always there was plenty of birds feeding on the seed, until the count started!

This very obliging Goldfinch let me get a few pictures.

Even done the classic head tilt pose for me!

Think the rain drops were a bit heavy for this little Coal Tit!

One of the visiting pair today..

A Great Tit also doing the famous head tilt pose !

As I was writing this blog, a Sparrowhawk came and landed in the nearby tree, lovely to see him back again!

Unfortunately, we found a dead female Bullfinch outside after the Sparrowhawk flew through, looks like it flew into the side of a parked van, there is no other sign of injures.

At 6pm, we headed out to investigate some nearby smoke and seen a Barn Owl hunting in front of us, we ran back at speed and grabbed our cameras and headed across the road, he dived a few times but came up with nothing, he'd done one last circle, came within 30 foot of us before flying along the brook into the distant. We have waited 6 years to see a Barn Owl on our patch, we will re-look tomorrow again!

Once again, a huge thank-you to our sponsors Garden Wildlife Direct who provide us with the seed for our patch and feeders, the constant supply of birds proves how high quality the seed is and they have helped us get out Garden List to 35.

Not so common Blue Tits don't seem to get as many as last year :(

Noticed this Female Chaffinch poor thing,
First spotted her August 2nd .
Last year had a couple of other chaffinch's with foot rot.

Female and Male just Bullfinches very jumpy !

As usual Goldfinches Squabling !

Then the sun came out so after tea headed out through campsite, I mean Bath Mill all finished now and looks good.

On Brook the Kingfisher darted past me and disappeared. While watching a Mistle Thrush was collecting worms almost at my feet I lifted the camera up and gone !!
Walking up byway saw this Roe Deer .

At Village around 50 Barn Swallows a few House Martin and ! 5 House Sparrows a short but  pleasant walk on leaving Bath Mill the bank at its exit in full bloom all planted by Bath Mill.

 Good Job !

7 May 2015

Palma Majorca

A quick blog from my time away in Palma - Majorca. I stayed there with friends and family from 29th April - 6th May. Weather was in the high 20's all day and all night and it reached 35 degrees one day !

We were sat around the pool one afternoon and a swarm of bee's came up from the sea there must have been thousands, initially we thought wasps, the hotel staff come over to check and asked everyone to move, they turnt out be Honey Bee's and they had to unfortunately fumigate them, but this site was amazing to see! Alot flew off before they managed to get to them so some did survive!

We had a Shag that would fish outside the hotel daily, we could see to the bottom of where he was fishing so this was amazing to watch him, he would return that same night and again in the morning, it kept me busy whilst sunbathing!

Drying his wings!

Spot the Hoopoe !! (I seen it land, but couldn't see so took a picture in the hope of later identifying, there is a Hoopoe there I promise!)

Whilst on the boat trip where I seen the Hoopoe, the boat driver pointed out some 'Spanish Penguins' I jumped up but they turnt out to be more Shag's nesting and drying their wings, not sure if they call them this over there or even if there is normally some there!

Under the sea, there were a school of small transparent fish, still in the process of identifying these, but were very close to the shore and were in schools of hundreds maybe even thousands!

Location:  Palma Nova - Majorca
Weather:  Hot, Sunny + Calm
Other Species: Swift, Shag, Hoopoe, Blackbird, Collared Dove, Wood Pigeon, Yellow-Legged Gull
