Species Highlights:
Long-Tailed Duck, Black-Necked Grebe, Lesser Scaup, Short Eared Owl, Kestrel
Observation:
Last day off so made the most of the blue skies, headed off to Barrow Tanks hoping the Long-Tailed dick would show, on pulling into car park it was 20 foot from the bank, showing well.
Such a beautiful ducks seen some in New York but not as well as this!
It floated past many times calling and chasing after the Tufted ducks.
I left it surround by Tufted ducks having a snooze my 3rd time and definitely the best.
My next target was the Black-Necked Grebe that had been showing from Morton Hide Chew Valley Lake, On arriving other birders said it was showing so darted into hide.
The Black-Necked Grebe or Eared Grebe looking good.
Also seen Scaup.
Time was 2pm and wife & kids were out until 6:30 so decided to go to Aust as i've not seen any Short Eared Owls this year so far, after around a 1 hour and 2 Hot chocolates a SEO took to the skies.
Stunning birds to watch, the sun was descending fast and he was difficult to focus on but 3 great birds in one day.
A Kestrel arrived on the scene and continually chased the Owl, I suppose its the Kestrel hunting ground.
Sunset and Short Eared Owls doesn't get much better!
Best shot focus wise was this directly into Sun.
The Kestrel hovered where the Owl had gone down, I waited some 15 mins the owl didn't come back up, time was ticking so i left them to it.
A great day more Owls to come i hope!
